On the 25th October 1941 a Wellington Bomber returning from a raid on Germany crashed in Cahermurphy in an area know as Clonwhite. The 6 aircrew had all baled out and where picked up in Quilty. The Canadian pilot who was the last to bale was believed to be attempting to crash into the sea.

The photo appears to show the crash site with members of the Local Defence Force and possibly a member of the aircrew (in the bomber jacket). If you can name any of the individuals please email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

The report from Major P.J. O'Connell of the G2 Southern Command sent on the 27th October 1941 can be viewed in the attached PDF, along with some additional background provided by Tony Kearns.
